World leaders condemn Taseer’s assassination
LONDON/UNITED NATIONS: World leaders on Tuesday condemned the assassination of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, terming it a loss to Pakistani leadership.
British Foreign Minister William Hague said that he was shocked by the assassination of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, adding that it was loss to the leadership of the country.
“I am shocked to hear of the assassination of Salmaan Taseer,” Hague said in a statement. “His death will be a loss to the leadership of Pakistan. On behalf of the British government I send my condolences to Mr Taseer’s family, friends and colleagues.”
Yvette Cooper, foreign affairs spokeswoman for the opposition Labour party, called on the British government to support Pakistan as it faces challenges, including terrorism and recovery from devastating floods last year.
“I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of Salmaan Taseer and strongly condemn this attack,” she said.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that the assassination of the governor was a “loss for Pakistan”, according to his spokesman. The UN chief has extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and to the government and people of Pakistan, his spokesman Martin Nesirky told the regular news briefing on Tuesday.
US State Department spokesman PJ Crowley said, “It is yet another grim reminder of what is at stake in Pakistan, strengthening the political system in Pakistan, creating durable civilian institutions and helping Pakistan reduce politically-motivated violence.”
US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron P Munter offered condolences on the assassination of Taseer.
In a statement, he said, “Taseer had the courage of his convictions and was a champion of tolerance. His death is a great loss to the people of Pakistan.”
“I am deeply saddened by the assassination of Governor Taseer. On behalf of the United States, I offer my condolences to his wife and children,” Munter added. Taseer was shot dead at an Islamabad market by one of his guards, who was opposed to the politician’s criticism of controversial blasphemy law, officials said, plunging Pakistan deeper into chaos. agencies
