Mumtaz Qadri sent on five-day remand
RAWALPINDI: Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Malik Akram Awan on Thursday rejected a police plea for a 12-day physical remand of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer’s killer Mumtaz Qadri and settled for only a five-day physical remand with the direction to have his medical checkup. Qadri’s lawyer Abdul Waheed Anjum said since he had confessed to killing Taseer, there was no need for his physical remand. Police submitted that they have to find out his motive and accomplices. Earlier, the court allowed the lawyer to meet Qadri for 20 minutes. In the morning, a group of lawyers and seminary students surrounded the court building to ‘welcome’ Qadri. To avoid chaos, he was sent to a temporary court set up in Islamabad. But his supporters prevented the judge from leaving for Islamabad. His lawyer told reporters that on his request the judge ordered Islamabad police to present the accused in his court in Rawalpindi. staff report
