Taseer’s assassination politically motivated: Babar

Staff Report

LAHORE: Federal Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan has said that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) led government will continue its policy of reconciliation and take coalition parties in confidence on important national issues.

Addressing a special meeting with newspaper columnists at the Gymkhana Club on Thursday, Babar said although his party was not quitting the coalition government in Punjab, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) could separate them from the coalition if it wanted to do so. “We will make our new strategy after the PML-N decision,” he added.

About the assassination of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, he said it was a politically motivated murder and a continuation of the wave of terror in society. The law minister said terrorism continued afflicting the country and the PPP-led government would continue its war against terrorism and would not allow anyone to carry out extra-judicial killings.

Highlighting the financial situation of the government, Babar said it was a crucial time and he was sure that no one would be able to run the government without facing serious financial crisis if the PPP-led government was toppled.

The law minister said there was a need for legislation to eliminate corruption from society. He said the PPP did not believe in the politics of victimisation as it had always followed the path of reconciliation and put aside party interests for national interests. Continuation of the reconciliation policy was imperative for the welfare of common man and national security, he added. Babar stated that the PPP would continue to play a positive role for strengthening democracy and the government will complete its five-year democratic tenure.
