Taseer died fighting for human rights: Zardari
* President visits family to condole Taseer’s death

LAHORE: Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer gave his life fighting for human rights, President Asif Ali Zardari said on Friday during his visit to the bereaved family of the late governor who was martyred in an attack by one of his guards.
The president consoled Taseer’s family and said that his martyrdom was a great loss not only for the family, but also for the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
The president said that all those behind the assassination of the governor would be exposed and punished in accordance with the law, adding that his sacrifice would not be in vain. The president, who arrived in the provincial capital on an unannounced visit to condole the death of Salmaan Taseer, met his wife Aamna Taseer, sons Shan Taseer, Sheheryar Taseer, Shehbaz Taseer, daughters Sara Taseer, Sanam Taseer, Shehrbano Taseer and sons-in-law Umar Salamat and Shoaib Taseer.
He said that Taseer led a brave and undaunted political life and embraced martyrdom following the golden tradition set by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto and hundreds of PPP workers.
“The life and sacrifice of Taseer is a beacon of light for PPP workers as well as democratic forces in the country,” he said, adding that the late governor had written, with his blood, a new chapter in the history of the PPP’s heroic struggle against bigotry, tyranny and obscurantism. “Taseer embraced martyrdom fighting for human rights, minorities’ rights and democracy as well as waging a crusade against extremism and fanaticism in the country,” Zardari said.
The PPP co-chairman said that party workers and democratic forces were proud of Taseer’s great sacrifice, reminiscing that he always called a spade a spade and did not mince words in expressing what he had believed to be true.
