President asks Sindh Bank to give 40pc jobs to women


* Zardari assures SCBA delegates of resolution of their issues

KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday advised the Sindh Bank’s management to consider allocating 40 percent of jobs to women in the province.

The president gave this advice during a briefing on the new setup of the Sindh Bank and its operations given by its president and chief executive officer, Bilal Sheikh, at the Bilawal House. Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, provincial Finance Minister Murad Ali Shah and senior officers of the federal and provincial governments were also present on the occasion.

In the briefing, it was informed that the Sindh Bank would operate on similar lines as the Bank of Punjab and the Bank of Khyber, which were mandated to finance clientele in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces respectively, particularly relating to small and medium size entrepreneurs.

President’s spokesman, Farhatullah Babar, said the president advised the bank management to consider allocating 40 percent of jobs to women. He said the first branch of the Sindh Bank, with its head-office in Karachi, was inaugurated in Naudero by President Zardari the last month.

The president spent a busy day on Saturday during which he was briefed on various developmental projects and also held meetings.

The spokesman said that a delegation of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), led by its president Asma Jehangir, also called on President Zardari at the Bilawal House, and discussed with him the issues relating to the bar. The president assured the SCBA delegates that he would forward the issues raised by them to the government for a favourable consideration. Federal Law Minister, Babar Awan, was also present in the meeting.

In another presentation, the president was given a briefing on the energy requirements for industrial estates in Sindh. The briefing was attended by Sindh CM Qaim Ali Shah, Federal Water and Power Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, Law Minister Babar Awan, provincial ministers, federal and provincial government officials.

President Zardari directed that a comprehensive plan be prepared for extraction of oil and gas from abandoned wells as well as for setting up captive power plants for selected industrial zones and areas. He said that captive power plants were needed to reduce transmission losses.

State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Shahid Kardar also called on President Zardari on Saturday. app
