Faraz remembered on birth anniversary

ISLAMABAD: ‘Ab Kay Jaisay Bhi Hon Halaat Hamaray Logo- Khud Ko Taqseem Na Karna Meray Saary Logo’- Following the eternal legacy of spreading love, peace, tolerance and unity among the masses conveyed by Ahmed Faraz (1931-2008) - one of the finest Urdu poet of contemporary Urdu literature, renowned poets from across Pakistan gathered at Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) to pay homage to late poet through their verses. Ahmed Faraz Trust (AFT) in association with PNCA arranged the Urdu Mushaira at PNCA to mark Faraz’s 80th birth anniversary, with a pledge not to surrender against cruel forces, as Faraz did not believe in kings or the succession system, and who endured much persecution and received much love. The poets, through their verses while paying glowing tributes to one of the supreme love poet, said that Faraz suffered imprisonment and persecution under Zia and was so heartbroken that he left the country like Faiz and lived in exile for six years. His great poem Mohasra (The Siege) remains one of the most powerful indictments of military rule. Faraz had always had the courage to remain to the left of every military regime, while many of our leading literary lights have taken the path of least resistance and keeled over, said Hassan Abbas Raza, while talking to this scribe. He said like Faiz, Faraz suffered prison and lived in exile during the dark days of military rule in the 1980s. Like Faiz, the people, especially the young, loved him and nobody wrote with more intensity about love than Faraz. “He gained fame as a young man in youngsters and his fame and popularity never languished. Few poets have had more of their work set to music and performed by the great singers of the age than Faraz, Hassan Abbas Raza said. Other poets said Faraz’s poetry would live on. “New generations will find new depth and new meanings in it. That is what great poetry does. And Faraz’s poetry is great poetry indeed,” they maintained. At the end of the Mushaira, prayers were offered for Faraz. staff report
