MQM decision to rejoin govt will strengthen democracy

* Information minister says PPP will not quit Punjab government because it wishes to save system

LALAMUSA: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Sunday that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) took a wise decision to sit on treasury benches and this decision would further strengthen democracy in the country.

Talking to newsmen, he said the MQM was our ally and it would remain our ally in the future. He said the PPP government adopted a policy of reconciliation to take the country out of crisis. He urged the political parties to exercise tolerance since blaming one another was not good.

Replying to a question, Kaira said Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani was making efforts to remove the apprehensions of all allied parties for the survival of democracy. He said the decision to increase petroleum prices was withdrawn for providing relief to the people.

He criticised former minister for science and technology Azam Swati for levelling allegations of corruption against the prime minister. He said that if Swati had known about it, he should have resigned from the cabinet.

Kaira, while referring to the issue of gas load shedding, said that this had to be done because of demand and supply gap. However, he added, the government was taking practical steps to improve the situation.

The minister said the PPP would not quit the Punjab government because it wished to save the system. He said, there was no such word as ‘ultimatum’ in politics and issues were resolved through dialogue.

“We are political people and would continue to hold dialogue and remove apprehensions with mutual consultation,” Kaira added. app
