HEC sends list of 298 lawmakers to ECP for further action

ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has forwarded a list of 298 lawmakers, who have not provided their supporting academic credentials for verification of their degrees, to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for further action.

HEC focal person, Rahim Bux Channa, said that the HEC was unable to complete the process of degree verification as 298 lawmakers had not provided the required matriculation and intermediate degrees despite several reminders. The HEC has dispatched the list of those lawmakers to the ECP to help arrange verification of their required documents.

The lawmakers include 112 members of the National Assembly, 102 of the Punjab Assembly, 10 each of Balochistan and Sindh assemblies, 43 of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly and 21 senators.

Channa said that the degrees of 818 parliamentarians, including MNAs, MPs and senators, had been declared genuine so far, while the hearing of cases of around 54 lawmakers was in progress.

The process of degree verification had been delayed due to the non-availability of documents, which should have been furnished by now. However, it is expected that the ECP will issue letters to these lawmakers soon as it had done in the recent past and the lawmakers will cooperate for completion of the process as soon as possible, Channa said. app
