Republican US senators visit Afghanistan, Pakistan

WASHINGTON: Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell travelled with six other Republican senators to Afghanistan and Pakistan to meet with American military leaders and with officials of these countries.

McConnell said in a statement that he travelled with four newly elected senators Kelly Ayotte, Ron Johnson, Marco Rubio and Pat Toomey, and other senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Burr. Those the senators met included General David Petraeus, who oversees US forces in Afghanistan; Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistani Army Chief General Ashfaq Kayani. They also met with US troops. McConnell said the trip focused on political, economic and security matters. ap
