Shujaat links economic recovery with Karachi peace

KARACHI: Pakistan Muslim League-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Mushahid Hussain Sayed Friday said that economic turnaround of the country is not possible unless there is peace in Karachi.

Addressing a ‘Meet The Press’ program here at Karachi Press Club (KPC), they said that they had handed over to the government a 5-point list of things to do but not issued any deadline because ‘we don’t believe in deadlines’.

“What the N-League had issued was not a deadline but a headline,” Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain said.

To a question, he admitted having knowledge of the facts that led to Karachi operation but said in order to get the realities people should wait till publication of his book.

“Matti Pao (just forget and move on) is an approach used in politics but the issue of target killings is a very serious one which must be dealt with properly,” he said adding in incidents of target killings no one had any idea who was killing who and why.

Ch. Shujaat Hussain said he wanted the government complete its five-year term.

"We do not want the political forces to derail the democratic system," he added.

He termed the tabling of deweaponization bill in the National Assembly by Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) as a welcome move.

General Secretary PML-Q, Mushahid Hussain Sayed linked economic turnaround of the country is with establishment of peace in Karachi. “The country is at the brink of economic collapse,” he said, citing corruption and target killings as the main reasons responsible for it.
