NA body rejects bill on country’s sovereignty
By Zeeshan Javaid
ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs on Friday categorically rejected a private bill “Sovereignty of Pakistan Act 2010” by expressing confidence over sovereignty of the country.
The proposed bill, which demanded preservation, protection and assertion of the country’s sovereignty, was laid by the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) during the 18th session of the National Assembly on January 12, 2010. The private bill was considered and later moved to the committee for further consideration.
The NA body was of the view that moving of such a bill was an unnecessary practice by the PML-Q and observed that “the government never compromised over the sovereignty of the country, so no more of this bill”.
The committee met at the Foreign Office with Awami National Party’s (ANP) chief Asfandyar Wali Khan in the chair to review the bill laid by PML-Q leader Riaz Hussain Pirzada, Nosheen Saeed, Sheikh Waqas Akram and Dr Doniya Aziz.
The bill stated that the country’s sovereignty and dignity not be compromised in any manner and no compromise be made on security or effectiveness of its nuclear programme.
