SC moved for emergency in Karachi


ISLAMABAD: A petition has been moved in the apex court over the target killings in Karachi. Tariq Asad advocate on Friday filed the petition under Article 184(3) of the constitution and made the federal government through the interior secretary, interior minister, Sindh chief secretary, Sindh home secretary and the PM respondents in his petition. The petitioner prayed the court to direct all respondents to issue a proclamation of emergency under Article 232 in Karachi and call the armed forces under Article 245 of the constitution to act to aid the civil authority, until the criminals are eliminated.

It was pleaded that Karachi be handed to the army and the interior minister be sacked for failing to maintain law and order in the economic hub of the country. The petitioner also prayed to the court to seek a comprehensive report from the authorities concerned regarding the killings in Karachi and direct the interior minister to disclose who was responsible for the killings and why he was unable to perform his duties. According to a Human Rights Commission of Pakistan report, a total of 1,981 people were killed in Karachi last year. The killings increased in January 2011, in which over 75 people were killed in various attacks. staff report
