Bus, oil tanker collide; 32 killed


HYDERABAD: At least 32 passengers including women and children were burnt to death when the bus carrying them hit an oil tanker and caught fire in the early hours on Sunday morning near Nooriabad, 80 km from here on Super Highway.

According to the police, the ill fated bus was on way from Karachi to Sukkur and when it reached near Nooriabad, the driver rammed the bus into the standby oil tanker.

The bus and oil tanker turned turtle and both the vehicles caught fire.

At least 20 to 23 passengers managed to escape from the bus, however, 32 others failed to survive and burnt alive.

The Motorway Police immediately rushed to the spot and called ambulances from Karachi and Hyderabad.

An official of the Motorway Police said that the charred bodies of the victims were taken out by cutting the wreckage of the two vehicles.

All the dead bodies were later shifted to Liaquat University Hospital, Hyderabad and Jamshoro while those who received injuries were shifted to hospitals in Karachi for first aid.

The DIG, Motorway Police, Aftab Pathan, said the accident occurred as a result of negligence of the bus driver.

The District Police Officer Jamshoro Dr. Farooq informed the media that around 45 to 50 passengers were onboard the bus when it hit the oil tanker which contained around 40,000 liters of fuel.

The hospital sources said that due to decomposed condition of the bodies, the identification could not be made possible.
