Country close to real democratic setup: ANP

Staff Report

PESHAWAR: Awami National Party (ANP) Central President Asfandyar Wali Khan said on Thursday Pakistan was very close to a real federal democratic setup due to 18th Amendment to the Constitution.

The ANP chief hoped that the 18th Amendment would be implemented in letter and spirit and the provinces would accelerate new responsibilities. Asfandyar was addressing ANP Swabi District general council meeting, chaired by Swabi District President Haji Rehmanullah in Peshawar. ANP Central Vice President and MNA Bushra Gohar, Provincial President Afrasiab Khattak, Provincial Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain and ANP Provincial General Secretary Tajuddin were also present.

“Most of the efforts extended by our ancestors for establishment of a democratic and federal system and attainment of people’s rights have become part of the constitution during the last three years,” said Asfandyar. Asfandyar said ANP was the only party that had achieved most of its manifesto and electoral promises and would work for complete peace during the coming two years.

The ANP leader underlined the need for peace in Karachi, saying as our mohajir brothers from India had demanded in 1947 that the people of Sindh should accept them, the MQM must also accept Pakhtuns, Punjabis, Sindhis and Balochis living in Karachi as a reality. Asfandyar said dialogues are also open to militants who accepted the writ of the state, have given up extremism and not allowing use of their territory against Pakistan or any other area outside Pakistan. He said the ANP believed in Bachaa Khan’s philosophy of non-violence and believed that peace in Pakistan, Afghanistan and even in the entire region was possible only in implementing this philosophy. ANP Provincial President Afrasiab Khattak and Provincial General Secretary Tajuddin also addressed the meeting.
