Punjab decides to move SC against CNG ban
LAHORE: The Punjab government on Saturday decided to move the Supreme Court against the federal government’s decision to ban CNG for public transport.
A high-level meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif decided to challenge the federal government’s decision to close CNG stations in the province in the Supreme Court. The meeting decided that members of the civil society, lawyers and Punjab government would jointly prepare a petition to submit in the Supreme Court within the next two days.
According to sources, the Punjab government is likely to take the stance that Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry told the government that diesel-free public transport would operate in the country, including Lahore, following a suo motu notice in 2009. Sources added that the Punjab government would further tell the court that transporters in Lahore installed CNG kits in their vehicles following the decision, but were no longer being provided CNG. inp
