PEMRA takes action against proscribed channels and programmes

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) enforcement teams raided a number of cable television networks in various parts of country in a bid to stop broadcast of illegal satellite and CD channels by cable operators despite repeated warnings to stop them.

A PEMRA press release stated that excessive CD channels on cable networks were not only a peril to social fabric but also the main source of content piracy and plagiarism, which PEMRA was trying to address seriously.

PEMRA also suspended transmission of seven television channels showing un-ethical and misleading documentaries related to health and other products in violation of PEMRA and health laws and the scope of their given licences.

The cable operators that faced PEMRA action included Dharyal Cable Network, LR Cable Network, Jhelum, Leo Biz Cable Network, Perfect Cable Network, Murree, Sky Video Cable Network Haripur. Ten satellite receivers and other equipment used to run illegal CD channels was confiscated.

Similarly in Lahore PEMRA cracked down on British Cable Network, LCN, Max Media Cable Network, New Tech Cable Network and Sony Cable Network. They confiscated 23 satellite television receivers, illegal decoders, set-top-boxes and equipment used to run illegal CD channels.

Moreover, in Pasroor and Sialkot, Butt Friends Cable Network, Orient Cable Network, Neuvo Albab Cable Network and Choudhry Cable Network were raided. Thirty-six receivers, decoders and CPUs were confiscated.

In Sindh, enforcement teams raided cable television networks operating in Karachi, Sakrand, Qazi Ahmed, Khadro, Sanghar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Matli, Badin, Tando Jan Muhammad, Talhar, Digri, Tando Ghulam Ali and Matiari. In total 54 receivers, decoders and computers were seized by PEMRA inspection teams.
