New Year brings back distressing memories

By Atif Raza

KARACHI: Since the beginning of 2012, there has been no letup in the deteriorating lawlessness in the city as Karachiities are desperate for mercy in the prevailing law and order situation.

The decision of surgical operations taken in the outgoing year yielded fruits as the business activities and late night social gatherings in the financial hub of the country, which remained dull almost throughout the year, returned back to normalcy. However, in the first few days of this year, the already frustrated Karachities witnessed several chronic incidents like grenade attacks, targeted killings, processions, rallies and political gatherings, tarnishing the hope of peace this year.

In light of the grievances of citizens, the security was tightened and the law enforcers had also started patrolling to root out every possible illicit activity.

At least 10 persons, including Awami National Party (ANP) District West activist Furqan Shah, ANP District West President Saeed Ahmed, two MQM activists Habib and Maqsood alias Guddu and PPP activist Majid fell prey to the fresh spate of target killings, however, none of the culprits could be nabbed.

Two unknown assailants threw a hand grenade at a mobile franchise located in Hyderi Market on January 2, injuring two people. It may be mentioned here that a similar attack was carried out on a mobile franchise situated in Shadman Town on 22nd December. The citizens, columnists and clerics termed these attacks as grievances of masses against the West but the Crime Investigation Department (CID) claimed to have killed the mastermind of these incidents and declared these attacks over the refusal of paying extortions to the militants. Typically, the law enforcement agencies continued blaming Taliban for all wrongdoings in the country, especially in Karachi.

The law enforcers without realising that Balochistan is still not Talibanised, claimed that the mobile franchise attacks were carried out on the command of Tehreek-e-Taliban Balochistan chief, exposing their failure in the investigation.
