Gilani dubs NRO as a normal thing
ISLAMABAD: As the sword hangs over the government for not implementing the orders of the superior judiciary over the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Tuesday dubbed the NRO as a normal thing, saying that such ordinances had been the order of the day in the past. “The NRO is in the thick of discussions these days, but NROs have been the order of the day in the past, which were named as plea bargains. Going abroad under a deal was also an NRO,” Gilani stated in an apparent reference to Nawaz’s deal with former President Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf, which was made public by Interior Minister Rahman Malik on Tuesday. In essence, there is no difference between both, except that we are victimised while others are rewarded, Gilani said while speaking to PPP members of the national and provincial assemblies, and office-holders of Peoples Students Federation (PSF) and People Youth Organisation (PYO) from Sargodha Division. According to a PM House spokesperson, the prime minister regretted that all dictators had been portrayed as innocent, while all politicians were considered corrupt. “We recently approved the introduction of a clause in the current law, under which it would be mandatory for government employees to declare their assets as public document,” he said. PM Gilani said that the media had reported Musharraf’s assets worth billions of rupees, but no action would be taken against him for this. He revealed that some ‘angels’ would come to him in jail and invite him and members of the PPP to join the fold of Musharraf. “These angels have promised power in return for trading conscience. But we never considered any back-door entry to power, nor did we commit any disloyalty,” he said. staff report
