Only people could decide about Gilani’s eligibility: Babar

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Babar Awan said on Tuesday that the people of Pakistan had made Yousaf Raza Gilani prime minister and “they can decide about his eligibility”.

“All the four (provincial) assemblies have also elected Asif Ali Zardari as president,” Babar told reporters outside the Supreme Court.

The PPP leader also asked PML-N President Nawaz Sharif to move the Supreme Court against former president Pervez Musharaf in line with Article 6 of the constitution.

Babar also made a reference to the Agartala conspiracy case in the backdrop of the Supreme Court’s order regarding non-implementation of its December 16, 2009, judgement on NRO.

He said he had talked about the Agartala case on December 1, 2011, and once again “I do not know why I am remembering the East Pakistan tragedy and the people who had constituted the tribunal in Agartala case”.

The Agartala case was a sedition case in Pakistan, brought forward by the Government of Pakistan against Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the leader of the Awami League and East Pakistan, and 34 other persons. Babar also referred to Article 187 (2) of the constitution, in which jurisdiction of the Supreme Court was defined.
