Education key to development of Punjab: ShahbazStaff Report
LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that the development of the province cannot be achieved without education, and the revolutionary steps taken by the Punjab government for improvement of this sector are unprecedented in the history of the country.
He made the statement while presiding over a cabinet meeting at Chief Minister’s Secretariat in which various important decisions were taken and approval was also given to some draft laws.
The meeting gave the approval for the establishment of three universities for women in Bahawalpur, Sialkot and Faisalabad, setting up of knowledge city at Rakh Dera Chahal, Evacuee Trust Properties (Management and Disposal) Amendment Bill 2012 and a policy aimed at plying CNG buses in big cities.
The meeting also reviewed the Punjab Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Authority Act 2012 and decided that the cabinet committee would consider recommendations for setting up a regulatory authority, and also publcise them to get public opinion. The meeting decided that recommendations with regard to setting up of a world class information technology university be submitted in the next cabinet meeting whereas Net Café Regulations Act be submitted again after reviewing its all aspects.
The chief minister said that there was a dire need for establishment of a world-class engineering and information technology university in Pakistan. He disclosed that an agreement with regard to establishing an information technology university had also been made during his visit to Turkey.
The chief minister constituted a cabinet committee headed by provincial law minister with regard to amendment in section 19 of Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability Act 2006 and added that the committee should submit its report after reviewing the amendment again.
The meeting also decided that the cabinet committee headed by provincial law minister should again review the proposed amendment in the draft law of Zakat and Ushr Act.
giving formal approval to the proposal of Net Café Regulations Act (Punjab Cyber and Gaming Café Regulations Act 2012) the cabinet requested that the Act be submitted for approval in the next cabinet meeting after reviewing all its aspects. The meeting also gave approval to the classification of ostrich as livestock / poultry instead of wildlife.
The proposal of Net Café Regulations Act is part of the Punjab chief minister’s policy under which clubs and cafes operating in various cities of the province will have to enforce regulations so that illegal and immoral activities can be checked there.
Separately, the French Ambassador to Pakistan, Philippe Theibaud, also called on the chief minister on Saturday. Matters pertaining to mutual interest and cooperation in various sectors were discussed during the meeting.
