President enjoys immunity: Aitzaz
LAHORE: Former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Aitzaz Ahsan said on Saturday democracy has no threat by the impeachment of the president. Speaking to the media at an exhibition of photographs, Ahsan said his viewpoint on writing a letter to Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari was different from that of his party. “According to Vienna Convention and Article 248, the president enjoys blanket immunity and in my point of view the government should write a letter to the Swiss government,” the PPP leader said. Ahsan denied reports he was serving as bridge between the judiciary and government. He also said he had not been offered the offices of Senate chairman or prime minister. However, he added, he had applied for a party ticket to contest the upcoming Senate elections. Ahsan said all the six options in the NRO implementation verdict are advices for the larger bench of the Supreme Court and not the government. The exhibition at Alhamra Art Gallery was organised by Bhutto’s family photographer Agha Feroz, and displayed photographs of PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Feroze told Daily Times he had honour of being personal photographer of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, his wife Nusrat Bhutto and daughter Benazir Bhutto. staff report
