PM to appear before SC
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani will appear before the Supreme Court on January 19 following the show-cause notice. This was decided at a meeting of coalition partners’ parliamentary committee, which was chaired by the prime minister himself. The meeting also discussed the present political situation of the country and the resolution moved in the National Assembly. Addressing the meeting, all coalition partners assured their full support to the prime minister in dealing with all matters, especially the issue of notice under the contempt of court. President Asif Ali Zardari also attended the meeting and discussed the present political situation with the leaders of coalition parties. The president said there was no clash between institutions, adding that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had always given respect to all institutions, especially the courts. He said the PPP had faced the same situation in the past and would manage to tackle the situation this time as well. He thanked the coalition partners for expressing their confidence in the government. He said that political situation would soon get better, adding that parliament was supreme and coalition partners’ role was important. Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Gilani said the government did not want any confrontation with any institution, including the courts. He said the government had full respect for courts, adding that it had always accepted their decisions. He said the PPP had always believed in the independence of judiciary. He said that prime ministers had been imposed on parliament in the past, “but it has become independent to elect its own leader of the House”. The present democratic system had been strengthening its roots and proving that it was strong enough, he said, adding that problems of the people were being resolved under this system. Gilani said the PPP government had initiated the policy of reconciliation and was taking all political forces along to solve all issues, whether they were related to security or political activities. He said the government believed in resolving the problems through negotiations and reconciliation. The prime minister said the affairs of government were being run smoothly in collaboration with the allied parties through mutual consultation. The meeting was attended among others by Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, Asfandyar Wali, Farooq Sattar, Munir Orakzai and Israrullah Zehri. staff report
