Rehman Malik takes credit for ‘exposing’ Mansoor Ijaz
ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik has claimed credit for ‘exposing’ the key figure behind the infamous memogate scandal, Mansoor Ijaz, whose statements put the executive and military on a verbal and practical war path. Speaking to reporters outside the Parliament House, Malik said the memogate issue will now be dealt by the commission investigating the case. The minister reiterated his claims that Ijaz was the man who was involved in overthrowing an elected government of former prime minister and Benazir Bhutto. The American-Pakistani businessman refused to come to Pakistan despite having the government’s complete assurance for his security. Malik said it was made very clear that the Islamabad inspector general of police (IGP) would provide Ijaz with all available security, adding that the military might have also been called for extra security measures. He also rejected claims made by Ijaz’s counsel, Akram Sheikh, that the government was trying to trap his client. Malik explained that Ijaz himself made statements against the army and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Malik said if Mansoor Ijaz was a man of character then he should come to Pakistan and testify. When asked about threats Ijaz had made against him, Malik answered by saying that he had been fighting terrorists and other enemies of Pakistan for many years and if Mansoor Ijaz wanted to join their ranks, he would be welcomed. inp
