Swedish envoy calls on BISP chairperson

ISLAMABAD: The newly-appointed Swedish ambassador to Pakistan, Lars-Hjalmar Wide, has said the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) is a “one stop shop” as far as poverty alleviation and women’s empowerment is concerned.

Wide made this statement when he called on BISP Chairperson Farzana Raja.

Farzana Raja apprised the visiting envoy about various initiatives of BISP, which aim at poverty reduction on short and long term basis as well as giving a detailed briefing about monthly cash grants to millions of poor families.

She told the ambassador that through its diverse initiatives, the BISP not only plays a significant role in poverty eradication but also contributes in curbing extremist and fundamentalist tendencies among youth by providing them with skills and income-generating opportunities. Ambassador Wide lauded the efforts of the BISP and said success of the organisation in reaching out to millions of poor families is highly impressive. app
