Heavy snowfall blankets most parts of Balochistan

QUETTA: The provincial capital and northern parts of Balochistan on Tuesday wore a white blanket due to heavy snowfall in mountains and plain areas.

According to official sources, Quetta valley and its surroundings received two inches of snowfall, as it was more heavy in mountainous areas or hilltops overlooking the provincial capital.

“The snowfall will continue until Wednesday morning and by mid-day the sky will be cleared,” Met Office official Shami told reporters.

The snowfall started at 1am and continued until Tuesday evening, dropping the temperature below freezing point.

However, suspension of gas supply across the province and major power breakdown added to the miseries of people in the extreme winter. “This has become a permanent feature in Balochistan that whenever mercury drops below freezing point, there will be no gas to warm the rooms or cooking,” said Sayed Muhammad Atif, a resident of Nawa Killi. “QESCO is carrying out load shedding of 16 to 18 hours.”

Traffic between Quetta to Kalat and Chaman remained disrupted since wee hours of Tuesday as vehicles got stuck in heavy snow on the national highway and main roads.

There was massive traffic jam in and around Quetta as families flooded parks and mountainous areas to enjoy the snowfall.

Kalat, Mastung, Khan Mahtarzai, Pishin and adjacent areas also received heavy snowfall, where people complained about suspension of gas supply and prolonged load shedding. mohammad zafar
