Proposals on Pak-US ties to be presented in parliament
By Manzoor Qadir
ISLAMABAD: The government will put forward recommendations of the National Security Committee (NSC) on new terms of engagement with the United States in the forthcoming session of parliament, Daily Times has learnt through reliable sources.
According to sources, the government has been engaged in taking all parliamentary parties onboard to ensure their presence and support during the coming session of parliament, commencing by the mid of this week. Sources said that during the coming joint session of parliament, the recommendations of the NSC would be put forward for approval. President Asif Ali Zardari is likely to summon the joint session on February 2.
It is pertinent to mention here that the NSC recommendations regarding the Pak-US ties and drone strikes have already been rejected by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defence. The ministries rejected these recommendations, as some of the points or recommendations were not in line with international laws, however, the NSC will still float the recommendations in the coming session of parliment.
Opposition leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan was also contacted to convince him about the recommendations. Nisar has indicated not to support the government move in the coming session, but negotiations continued between the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on the issue.
However, religious parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami and others, have already warned the government that they would protest not only in front of parliament but also stage sit-ins across the country if NATO supply routes were resumed. Source confirmed that in the recommendations, the NSC has said very little on drone attacks – that have once again started in the tribal areas of the country.
