Zardari reviews relations with coalition partners

KARACHI: Preisdent Asif Ali Zardari summoned Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and other senior PPP leaders to Karachi in what was being seen as an emergency meeting to review relations with the government’s coalition partners. Prime Minister Ashraf discussed the situation in the country, especially the law and order during the meeting. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was also present during the meeting. The prime minister also briefed the president about the energy situation in the country and various measures being taken to overcome the energy shortages. Meanwhile, sources said that the prime minister and other party leaders had been called in to discuss Tehreek-e-Minhajul Quran chief Tahirul Qadri’s planned long march on Islamabad on January 14, prevailing political situation and politics of the coalition partners. The emergency meeting comes in the face of the decision by the government’s main coalition partners – MQM and the PML-Q – to support the long march. Qadri has threatened to lead a march of four million people to Islamabad. Addressing a press conference at his residence on Tuesday, PML-Q leader Ch Parvez Elahi said that the PML-Q fully supported Dr Qadri’s demand of political reforms before the elections. However, the PML-Q leader gave no commitment of participation in the long march. agencies
