JUI-F won’t allow derailing of democracy

QUETTA: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Wednesday said that JUI-F would not support any act which could derail the democratic system in the country. Terming Tahirul Qadri’s slogan “riasat bachao, siasat nahin” (Save the state, not politics) as illogical, Fazlur Rehman has said that he does not know what game Qadri was playing and with whose support. Fazl expressed these views while talking to the media after his arrival in Quetta from Islamabad on Wednesday. Fazal, who also occupies a National Assembly seat and heads the Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir Affairs, further said that his party had never supported any action that could harm democracy and never will. The JUI-F chief noted that the slogan “first reforms, then elections” was also raised during the era of military dictator Ziaul Haq, after which no election was held. “Some forces are trying to derail the democratic process through undemocratic means, but we will not let them succeed,” Fazl said. He added that martial law is always justified with the claim that it has been imposed to save the country. Apparently referring to Qadri, the Maulana said, “A failed person is playing what role in politics and on whose behalf should be investigated.” He added that all the institutions should make their position clear as to which institution plays what role. “If attempts were made to weaken the institutions, the country would bear the brunt and if institutions work within their limits, nothing would harm the state,” the JUI-F leader said. He urged the democracy-loving political forces to get united under one umbrella against anti-state and anti-democratic forces in the country. Fazl maintained that only charter (s) could save the country, not long marches. staff report
