LHC moved against Qadri’s long march

RAWALPINDI: A petition was moved in the Lahore High Court against the proposed long march announced by Tehreek-e-Minhajul Quran chief Tahirul Qadri on January 14. Petitioner Huzaifa Bukhari submitted his petition though Advocate Assad Abbasi in the Rawalpindi bench of Lahore High Court and has made the federation of Pakistan, government of Punjab, Tahirul Qadri and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) as respondents. The petitioner claimed that Qadri, a Canadian citizen, wants to postpone general elections through his long march. He prayed to the court to initiate proceedings against Qadri, as the march was against the state and was a conspiracy to abrogate the constitution. The petitioner added that the proposed long march can create chaos in the country, therefore the court must order to stop it. The LHC bench accepted the petition and would hear it today (Thursday). Qadri, with MQM’s support, has called a “million-man march” on Islamabad to demand reforms in the electoral system. He said that Islamabad will become a ‘peaceful’ Tahrir Square during the march. MQM chief Altaf Hussain has expressed full support for Qadri and his cause and has called for the maximum number of people to participate in the march to bring a “revolution” in Pakistan. Qadri had on Tuesday said that first there should be reforms in the country and then elections. He said that four million people will gather in the federal capital to “demolish the wall of cruelty with one stroke”. online
