Taseer was fighting for the rights of minorities and supported a Christian woman, Aasia Bibi, who was booked in a blasphemy case. During the session on Friday, a minority member belonging to the opposition Pakistan People’s Party, Pervez Rafique, paid tribute to the Salmaan Taseer, calling him ‘Shaheed-e-Insaf’ (Martyr of Justice).

He asked Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan to offer Fateha and observe two minutes silence in the House in the memory of the assassinated governor. Although Law Minister Rana Sanaullah of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz endorsed the request of the opposition member, but he said that it was the responsibility of Salmaan Taseer’s party – PPP – to observe death anniversary of the assassinated governor. However, he said there was no objection to offering Fateha. At this, the speaker led a prayer for Taseer, also praying for his kidnapped son, Shahbaz Taseer.
