Contempt case hearing : MQM moves SC seeking exemption for Altaf

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Friday filed an application seeking exemption from personal appearance for party chief Altaf Hussain before the apex court in contempt of court case, which will be heard on January 7 in Islamabad.

The application was filed by Senator Dr Faroug Naseem and Kazi Khalid Ali Advocates in the Supreme Court’s (SC) Karachi Registry. In the application they pleaded the court to allow MNA Dr Farooq Sattar to appear before the court on behalf of Altaf Hussain in the contempt case. According to the petition, Altaf’s admirers think his life will be at risk if he comes to Pakistan. The petition further states that the political leadership of the country has been at risk during the last five years which is evident in the assassination of Benazir Bhutto and Bashir Bilour. The apex court had issued a contempt of court notice to Altaf and his party’s deputy convener, Dr Farooq Sattar, on December 14 over the former’s derogatory remarks about the Supreme Court judges. agencies
