ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is attempting to pit the scholars of Brailvi school of thought against Dr Tahirul Qadri by backing the Ulema Mashaikh Council Pakistan (UMCP) to hold a meeting against him to prove that his claims false.

UMCP, an umbrella organisation of Brailvi school of thought, will hold a meeting on Friday (tomorrow) in a hotel in Islamabad and show video about statements of Qadri on blasphemy law and claims of having seen Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in his dream. The announcement for this meeting was not released by the council, but the PML-N media cell in the federal capital, which proves the opposition party’s covert support to this meeting against Qadri.

Although the PML-N leadership and even its president, Nawaz Sharif, have been speaking against Qadri’s planned long march on January 14, but the party has adopted another tactic to malign the Tehreek-e-Minhajul Quran chief by bringing to fore the Ulema-Mashaikh Council. Nevertheless, the ruling PPP is also feeling uneasy because of Qadri’s march. It is the PML-N which has felt the pinch more and has devised various strategies to stop the march by Qadri.

The planned meeting of the UMCP will open floodgates of opposition even from his own sect in addition to the Deobandi school of thought, which has been speaking against Qadri for quite some time, especially following his announcement to stage a multi-million-men march to Islamabad. The Tehreek-e-Talban Pakistan (TPP), mainly comprising the people associated with the Deobandi school of thought, has already labeled him as an agent of the West.

According to the announcement of the PML-N, around 200 ulemas and mashaiks will attend the meeting and they would be shown the statements of Qadri on blasphemy law, and videos in which he is shown claiming that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has blessed him in his dream. These scholars will assess these statements and claims by Qadri and check their veracity in the light of articles 62 and 63 of the constitution and blasphemy law of the country.
