* Says MQM would not quit coalition govt
Staff Report
LAHORE: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Haider Abbas Rizvi, while confirming his party’s participation in Tahirul Qadri’s long march, has said that it (the long march) was not against any government, the People’s Party or the PML-N.
He said that his party would continue its coalition with the PPP, but would participate in Qadri’s long march for electoral reforms and implementation on articles 62 and 63 of the constitution. Rizvi was talking to media along with his party members after holding a special meeting with the Tehreek Minhajul Quran (TMQ) leaders, who were led by Dr Rahiq Abbasi at Model Town on Wednesday.
While answering queries of the journalists the MQM leader said that his party would not quit the PPP-led coalition government, but would be part of the long march in which their caravans would remain separate from other participants. Talking about the threats of a suicide or other terror attack during the long march, Rizvi said that they have no confirmation or report regarding this so they would not deviate from their scheduled plan to hold the long march towards Islamabad.
He also refused to accept federal government’s claims regarding threatening call from terrorists and said that Interior Minister Rehman Malik was trying to scare the participants of the march by giving baseless statements. When asked why the MQM was supporting Qadri’s agenda despite being a part of the government, he said that MQM was fighting to end feudalism from the country and Qadri’s agenda was also against the feudal political monopoly.
Rizvi said that more than half of the total parliamentarians could not qualify to contest elections or to be elected to parliamentary seats if articles 62 and 63 were fully implemented, as no one could become a member of the assemblies or the Senate if he had gotten a loan written off in the past, while a non-taxpayer can also not be a legislator under the constitution. To a query about the details of MQM chief Altaf Hussain’s threat of a “political drone attack” in the coming days, Rizvi said that he was not in a position to say anything on it.
