Democracy only option for Pakistan: CJP

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said on Wednesday that there is no place for any other system in the country other than democracy. Hearing a Workers Party petition about election reforms, the chief justice said that we have to strengthen democracy and the democratic institutions. A three-member bench headed by CJP sought a reply from the federal government regarding compulsory voting in the general elections. The court said it would appreciate if the government legislates for compulsory voting. The chief justice inquired from Attorney General of Pakistan Irfan Qadir what was the stance of the federal government on the issue. Qadir replied that the government had to legislate in that regard. He said that in many countries, including America and Canada, there was no condition of compulsory voting. hasnaat malik
