US supports civilian democracy in Pakistan

WASHINGTON: Regarding the political situation in Pakistan, the US has said that Pakistan has an established electoral process; it is outlined in the constitution and the US supports civilian democracy in Pakistan.

The US has also hinted about the change in its view on the issue whether India must go inside Pakistan in hot pursuit of terrorists or not.

“Fundamentally, this is an issue for Pakistanis to resolve. They’ve got to resolve their internal political issues in a just and transparent way. Pakistan has an established electoral process; it’s outlined in the constitution. That needs to be respected. We support civilian democracy in Pakistan going forward. This needs to be solved democratically and under the constitution,” said the State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland.

She also said, “We’ve talked about this a number of times over the past week. We are concerned about the spate of violence along the Line of Control. We are encouraged, though; those senior levels in the Indian and Pakistani Government have been talking directly about how to calm the situation and how to address the concerns. We were happy, just in the last 24 hours, to see both governments recommit to dialogue as the right way forward on this, and that’s what we support.” “We favour dialogue between India and Pakistan on this issue in any and all channels that both governments consider appropriate. That’s the right way to work through this,” she added saying that both of the American ambassadors at Islamabad and New Delhi have been activated in the wake of aforesaid situation.

“Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is very well aware of the situation,” Nuland added.

While reading out a statement, Nuland said that the United States was appalled and saddened by the Syrian regime’s deadly attack yesterday, on the University of Aleppo, which reportedly killed more than 80 people and injured more than 150 people. online
