Democracy must be allowed to flourish: KP minister

* Syed Ahmad Shah says this is a moment of maturity for democratic process

ABBOTTABAD: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Minister for Irrigation Syed Ahmad Hussain Shah said on Thursday that democracy will never mature if we start looking for alternatives every time it does not appear to be working perfectly.

Talking to Daily Times, Shah said that Britain supports democracy in Pakistan and would very much like to see the democratic process succeed in the country, adding that unfortunately we cannot follow the right track that could lead us to peace and tranquillity.

He said that the state stands at an important crossroads where it has a huge opportunity where a democratically elected government can pass on power to another democratically elected government. Shah said that democracy was not easy and it took Britain hundreds of years to perfect the process of parliamentary democracy. “And if you see the constitutional reforms in mother land, the strength of the media, the appointment of an independent election commissioner, then this is a moment of maturity with the democratic process, and the countrymen must not allow this moment to slip away.” The minister said Britain would work with whoever Pakistan elects as president or prime minister. He said that a conspiracy was hatched against the ruling PPP government who sacrificed its leaders for the restoration of democracy in the country. He said it was a duty of every citizen to protect the democratic setup in the country. He said that dictatorial regimes had ruined the economy of the country and had sabotaged the dreams of its people. staff report
