Country will not accept any unconstitutional move: Gilani

LAHORE: Former prime minister and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Yousaf Raza Gilani on Sunday said that the country would not accept any unconstitutional move.

He also dispelled the perception in some sections of society that the ISI and the army stopped the federal government from launching an operation against Tahirul Qadri’s long march. Talking to media persons on his arrival at the Allama Iqbal International Airport on Sunday, Gilani said that all political parties, including the opposition, showed political maturity on the issue of Qadri’s long march. Answering different queries especially about the march, the former premier said that the government itself gave permission to Qadri to hold the rally, and no one knew who he would talk against. On the question why the government hesitated in taking action against the long march, he said that if the government had not allowed the Tehreek-e-Minhajul Quran chief to hold the rally and sit-in in Islamabad, people would say that the government was scared of the cleric. The former premier said that the PPP-led government is striving hard to remove the sense of deprivation among the people of southern Punjab. He said the PPP would resolve the problems being faced by the people in southern Punjab on a priority basis. Gilani said that the commission set up to create Bahawalpur and South Punjab provinces would present its report in the National Assembly soon. He asserted that he protected the constitution as prime minister. On a query, Gilani said that he would support legal procedure for constitutional reforms in the Election Commission of Pakistan. He also added that elections would be held on time. staff report
