Sindh has allocated Rs 14 bn for education: Qaim

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government is keen to promote education and in this regard Rs14 billion were allocated in the current financial year by the provincial government.

Addressing at foundation stone laying ceremony of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Chair, a project with estimated cost of Rs 41million, and Date Palm Research Centre with estimated cost of Rs 57.283 million at Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) Khairpur, he said the government wanted that Pakistani varsities compete with world class universities. He said the provincial government allocated Rs 14billion for education sector, while the past governments had allocated only Rs 4 billion in this regard.

He said that SALU is a gift of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to the masses of this area. He said that after the 18thamendment the education subject is devolved to provinces. He said establishment of a Provincial Higher Education Commission is also in progress.

Shah said that the NFC award was the a landmark achievement of the present government. Previously the funds were divided on population basis and now the NFC award was being distributed on the basis of multi-criteria, including resource generation. He said under this formula the Sindh government had got Rs 55 billion and previously this amount was Rs 23 billion. He said this is a great achievement under the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari.

The chief minister said that seven universities had been established in different districts of Sindh in public sector with
a cost of Rs 400 billion.

Qaim Shah said that 4000 schools out of 7000 closed schools in Sindh province have been made functional. He said we are paying Rs3450 stipend to poor girl students especially in remote area of Tharparkar and Dadu districts. He announced a housing society scheme for SALU employees on the land available with the University. He also announced release of pending aid in grant of Rs 311 million for the university and Rs 9 million as additional grant.
