Parents urged to educate children about puberty
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Prominent religious scholar Maulana Aftab Hussain al Jawadi from Jamia al Kausar, Islamabad, has urged parents to educate their children and provide proper guidance about puberty.
He said that due to social restrictions and existing cultural taboos, only 29 percent girls and 41 percent boys have access to correct information about puberty and hygiene.
He said that the remaining millions, in their quest for knowledge, often seek information from unreliable sources, which he said makes them vulnerable to exploitation and life-threatening diseases.
“When boys and girls attain puberty, it is the duty of their parents that they guide them properly about the changes,” Maulana Jawadi said.
He said that parents without any hesitation should communicate with their children about the physiological changes puberty brings. He said children must also be informed about personal hygiene-related issues.
He also emphasised on the role of teachers in imparting knowledge on sensitive personal issues. “It is the responsibility of teachers as well to make them (teenagers) understand the emotional and psychological aspects of growing up.”
He said that with this guidance “we can save all our future generations from moral deprivation”.
He said that absence of such guidance causes anxiety, frustration and confusion, and makes youngsters vulnerable to sexual abuse/exploitation and life-threatening diseases. “The lack of timely and proper information from the right sources also misleads the youngsters and they indulge in wrong, illegitimate, immoral and abusive activities,” he added.
