Ashrafi made CII member
LAHORE: President Asif Ali Zardari has made Pakistan Ulema Council Chairman Allama Tahir Ashrafi member of Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) in recognition of his services for the promotion of interfaith harmony and tolerance in the country.
Ashrafi has been appointed CCI member for three years. The CII is a constitutional body that advises the legislature whether or not a certain law is repugnant to Islam. It is one of the supreme national organisations and its members enjoy facilities and powers equal to that of members of the Senate. The council has a chairman and eight members. Talking to Daily Times after his nomination, Ashrafi said that he would make sincere and concerted efforts to eradicate the menace of sectarian violence, which is at the moment one of the great challenges facing Pakistan. staff report
