Undemocratic elements’ plan won’t succeed: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf Wednesday said that some undemocratic elements and non-state actors are busy in their plan to scuttle the democratic dispensation in the country, but they won’t succeed adding that the demand of the dissolution of Election Commission was extra-constitutional.

PM Raja Pervaiz Ashraf is presiding over a meeting of the federal cabinet, which is likely to approve a three-year trade policy and Health Ordinance-2012.

Addressing the meeting, PM Ashraf said that general elections in the country are about to be held in the next few weeks, while the government was determined to hold transparent and impartial elections.

He said that the efforts to derail the democratic system not only threaten the democracy but could also hit the economic stability. He said he would not allow anybody to derail the democratic setup and added, “Earlier also we have given sacrifices for the democracy and ready to do so now.”

PM said that the Chief Election Commissioner or members election commission are nominated under rules and procedures laid down in the constitution, as such, the demand for the dissolution of Election Commission was extra-constitutional.

The prime minister said that the strategy for the upcoming elections was being formulated in consultations with the allied parties.

The impartial caretaker setups would be made in consultations with all the stakeholders of the federation and the provinces, PM said.
