2016 to be year of terrorism elimination, says COAS

Signs death warrants of nine terrorists; vows to break nexus of terror, crime and corruption

RAWALPINDI/ISLAMABAD: The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Raheel Sharif, on Friday said 2016 would be the year of elimination of terrorism.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the army chief reached Gwadar after visiting Talar and Turbat, and met the Baloch elders. He said he was fully confident that the nexus of terrorism, crime and corruption would be completely eliminated in 2016. “It will also be the year of national solidarity,” he said.

“We will be able to break the webs of curses like terrorism, crime and corruption with the support and backing of the entire nation whereby paving the way towards dispensation of justice and achieving lasting peace,” he added.

General Raheel said the armed forces would not hesitate to render any sacrifice for ensuring peace in the country. He assured the people of the military’s full support for security and development and said the army would continue playing a role in the development of Gwadar Port.On the other hand, the army chief signed death warrants for nine hardcore terrorists, confirming the death sentences awarded to them.

They were involved in heinous acts including the attacks on the Parade Lane Mosque Rawalpindi, ISI office in Multan and law enforcement agencies as well as kidnapping and killing civilians in Lahore.

These convicts were tried by military courts and confessed committing the crimes. The details of each case are:Muhammad Ghauri was an active member of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and in-charge of its media cell. He was involved in the Parade Lane Mosque attack which resulted in the death of 38 persons and injuries to 57 others. He was tried on four charges.

Abdul Qayyum was an active member of Harkat-ul-Jihad-e-Islam, Punjab, and involved in the attack on the ISI office in Multan, claiming seven lives and injuring 72 others. He was tried on seven charges.

Muhammad Imran, TTP member, was involved in terrorism acts and attacking law enforcement agencies which caused death/injuries to civilians and soldiers. He also admitted to his offences before a magistrate and trial court. He was tried on four charges.

Aksan Mehboob was an al-Qaeda operative and was involved in attacking law enforcement agencies using firearms which resulted in death and injuries to soldiers. He was tried on four charges.

Abdul Rauf Gujjar, Muhammad Hashim, Suleman, Shafqat Farooqi and Muhammad Farhan were active members of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP). They were involved in killing of civilians in Lahore.

Rauf was punished for the targeted killing of four civilians — Syed Shakir Ali Rizvi, Syed Waqar Haider, Syed Arshad Ali and Ghulam Mustafa — as well as causing injuries to Abdul Sattar Tahir and Anwar Hussain in Lahore.

Two other accused Hashim and Farhan were involved in the murder of Ghulam Mustafa and injuring Anwar Hussain. Rauf was tried on eight charges whereas the remaining convicts on four.
