Aitzaz opposes tenure extension to army chief
Asma wants strengthening of institutions
LAHORE: The PPP Senator Aitzaz Ahsan Monday said the Federation had been unnecessarily intervening in affairs of provinces.
Talking to the media at the Lahore High Court (LHC) premises, Aitzaz said neither Dr Asim Hussain nor the PPP is a terrorist. He said past record of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is filled with vindictive politics. He said connecting the PPP with terrorism was very unwelcoming.
Disapproving rumours about prolonged stay of Asif Zardari out of Pakistan, he said the former president would return soon to take over administrative affairs of the party. He said Pak-India ties should not be marred in the wake of Pathankot incident. He also ruled out involvement of Pakistan civil or military leadership in the attack.
In a separate media talk, former bar president Asma Jahangir said state institutions should be strengthened, instead of individuals. To a question about extension in tenure of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Raheel Sharif, she said the chief should be given extension if Pakistan Army had no other general to lead.
She said she believed that there would be many highly professional and capable generals in the Army who could lead the force. She lamented that institution of Supreme Court was also being weakened through ad hoc appointment of judges.
Online adds: Aitzaz Ahsan said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif might not complete his tenure due to his mistakes. “Nawaz Sharif always commits some major mistakes. Perhaps the prime minister may not complete his tenure due to his mistakes. Now we have to see when he does shoot in his own foot,” he said.
He held that the success of operation Zarb-e-Azb was a big achievement of General Raheel Sharif and the entire nation lauded that. Aitzaz, however, said the PPP is not in favour of any extension in the tenure of the army chief. He said General Raheel should retire from his post on completion of his tenure.
He stressed that the federal government should stop interfering in the affairs of Sindh, otherwise differences could surface between the two.
