By Mumtaz Alvi
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan Tuesday advocated a proactive role by Pakistan for resolving issues between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
Imran tweeted that as tension grew between Saudi Arabia and Iran, Pakistan must play a proactive role in resolving the tension between the two Muslim countries.
In her reaction to Adviser to PM on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz’s policy statement in the National Assembly on Saudi-Iran stand-off, PTI Spokesperson Dr Shireen Mazari charged that it appeared the government currently had no policy on this issue and a policy would be framed after the arrival of Saudi Foreign Minister to Islamabad this week.
“Saudi-Iran tension is a sensitive issue but the adviser has given an old statement. Pakistan must come up with its own policy without taking sides,” she emphasised.Mazari proposed that the prime minister should pay visits to Iran, Saudi Arabia and other Islamic countries to help settle the issues.
Differences with Bhutto apart, he had a very good foreign policy, she said and urged in-camera briefing to Parliament on the current situation, saying if the legislature would leave aside space, someone else would step in to fill it in and foreign policy would not be framed at the Foreign Office.
She said that the attacks on embassies were condemnable, alleging Saudi regime was exerting pressure on other Sunni countries to sever relations with Iran and the situation would be detrimental.
Meanwhile, speaking to workers in Rawalpindi, Pakistan Sunni Tehreek (PST) central leader Sahibzada Abdul Rehman Sialwi said that the current stand-off between Saudi Arabia and Iran was a matter of grave concern for the Islamic fraternity. “The crisis gripping Islamic countries and it is a part of the imperialist forces’ great game to pitch them against one another and we must understand it,” he emphasised.
He urged immediate resumption of dialogue between the two nations and pointed out that maintain neutrality; Pakistan should come forward to play role of mediation. He pointed out that the protest demonstrations in Pakistan in support of Saudi Arabia and Iran could fuel sectarian tension, which must be avoided at any cost, as what was the need of the hour was unity in the ranks of Ummah.
