Zarb-e-Azb empowers tribal women, says Marvi

BAJAUR: State Minister and Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Chairman Marvi Memon Sunday said the operation Zarb-e-Azb has not only brought peace but also paved way for self-empowering of womenfolk in tribal areas. The BISP chairperson, who visited here to formally launch ‘Beneficiaries Outreach and Communication Strategy’, said the government would also provide interest free loans and training to the women to empower them.

Addressing participants at the launching ceremony, she said that currently as many as 60,000 women of Bajaur agency were BISP beneficiaries and all the deserving women would be included in the programme after completion of a survey.

Marvi said that local handicraft and embroidered products would be showcased in international market to enable women earn their livelihood in a better manner. She said skilled women of Bajaur would be supported in showcasing their products and getting reasonable financial returns.

International exhibitions would be arranged to achieve the objective and make the womenfolk self-reliant, she said, adding 45,000 BISP beneficiaries committees were operating across the country and creating awareness among women about their rights. Under the BISP, Marvi said, 5.2 million registered women each were being provided Rs 1,500 per month financial assistance, adding that the distribution process had been simplified to avoid any inconvenience.

The chairperson said BISP was working to protect women’s rights and make them stronger financially so that they could support their families in an effective manner.

The present government had done a number of legislation for protecting women’s rights and extend maximum facilities to them, she maintained.

Marvi said afresh BISP survey was being launched to accommodate maximum number of needy and it would hopefully be completed before 2018.

She said health cards were also being issued to the registered women for providing them complete health cover, besides BISP was creating awareness among them about importance of infants’ immunisation against different fatal diseases. Last year, she said, the BISP helped bring one million children to schools, who were not getting education due to one reason or the other, and this year two million such children would be enrolled. Marvi also appreciated the political agent of Bajaur agency for fully functioning the lady technical school in the area.

She was of the view that imparting education to the women and children was need of the hour adding that more attention would be given for promotion of education in the area.
