Pakistan signs MoUs with Qatar

* Gen Majid offers training, manpower and military hardware support to Qatari forces

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday signed two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on defence cooperation with the Qatar Armed Forces and the deputation of personnel with the Qatari Amiri Guards respectively, according to a news release issued by the ISPR here on Friday.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (JCSC) Chairman General Tariq Majid who is on a two-day official visit to Qatar, signed the memorandums. General Majid met Qatar Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Hamad Bin Ali Al Attiyah, Qatari Amiri Guards Commander General Hazza Khalil Al Shahwani, Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Al Thani, minister for security and interior affairs. The armed forces commander received General Majid upon his arrival at the Doha Airport.

During his meetings, General Majid appreciated the dynamic rule of Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, which has brought impressive progress to Qatar, and said that proactive diplomatic role played by Qatar in striving for resolution of political crises in Lebanon, Yemen and Darfur issues was an important contribution towards reduction of tensions and promotion of peace in the region.

Both Pakistan and Qatar occupy strategically pivotal locations and being the extended neighbourhood, their security narratives were intertwined, he said. General Majid offered increase in training, technical manpower and military hardware support to Qatar Armed Forces, and other security enforcement agencies. He also invited investments and proposed joint ventures in defence industrial sectors.

The Qatari military commanders extended exceptional hospitality to the visiting Pakistani delegation and expressed keen desire in expansion and diversification of the defence cooperation indicating that a team of defence officials will shortly visit Pakistan to discuss specific areas of interest and modalities for future collaboration.

A formal dinner was also hosted by the commander of the Qatar Armed Forces, General Hamad Bin Attiyah, in the honour of General Tariq Majid and his delegation which was also attended by the minister for Security and Interior Affairs, ambassador of Pakistan to Qatar and other senior military and civil officials.
