Sherpao expects general elections if disqualifications of MPs continue
* PPP-S chief says reconstruction in Malakand ‘not satisfactory’
Staff Report
MINGORA: Pakistan People’s Party-Sherpao (PPP-S) chief Aftab Sherpao said on Sunday that general elections could be held in the country if parliamentarians continued to be disqualified due to fake degrees.
He made these remarks while addressing a press briefing during his visit to Swat. “General elections could be held in the country if parliamentarians continued to be disqualified due to fake degrees,” Sherpao said. The former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister said that general elections could be a better option than by-polls if a large number of parliamentarians are disqualified due to fake degrees. The PPP-S chief said that the reconstruction work in Malakand division was not satisfactory after the military operation was completed. He alleged that the federal government had allocated funds worth Rs 15 billion for the rehabilitation of the internally displaced persons (IDP) of Swat but the provincial government did not mention it in the budget. About the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the educational institutions, he said that the US had provided $400 million to the government for the reconstruction of educational institutions in the war-affected areas, but the government had yet to start the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the educational institutions, which was condemnable.
Sherpao said that during the Swat military operation around 3,000 people were arrested on suspicion of links to the Taliban. He demanded the government release the people who could not be proven guilty. Sherpao said that all terror suspects be produced in courts so that they could be tried for the crimes they had committed.
