Delay in NAB chairman’s appointment angers SC
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday expressed displeasure over the delay regarding the appointment of the chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and directed the attorney general to find out when the government would make the appointment.
A three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday, was hearing the Bank of Punjab (BoP) loan scam case.
The court also directed NAB prosecutor general to submit a reply regarding his appointment to office.
Khawaja Haris, the counsel for BoP, objected over NAB Prosecutor General Irfan Qadir’s representation for the bureau in the BoP fraud case, as he at one stage had been accused in the case.
Aftab Sultan, who had been appointed to head the investigation team to probe the Haris Steel Mill case, informed the court that he needed three police officers to assist him in the investigation, adding that their appointments had to be notified by the Establishment Division.
The chief justice said there was a provision for the appointment of the chairman in the NAB Ordinance 2002, and a delay by the government was therefore incomprehensible.
The chief justice said many objections would arise to the action of the acting chairman, therefore, the government should appoint the chairman soon. The court adjourned the case until July 7.
