Court acquits Dr Aafia’s ex-husband

KARACHI: The judicial magistrate east on Monday acquitted Dr Amjad Khan, ex-husband of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, in a case filed by Dr Fauzia Siddiqui, sister of Dr Aafia, as due to lack of evidence.

Dr Fauzia had alleged that Khan had entered her house and carrying a lethal weapon, asked for the custody of his eldest son Ahmad, who is in the custody of Dr Aafia’s family.

The police security guards provided to the Siddiqui family by the government stated in their affidavits that they were constantly guarding the family and no such incident took place in their presence on the day specified in the FIR. The judge ruled that the FIR be disposed of as ‘C’ class. Dr Khan’s lawyers said that apart from malicious harassment, the FIR was also intended to disqualify him from securing the custody of his children which was his obligation in the absence of the children’s mother. It is pertinent to mention that Dr Khan was also acquitted by the judicial magistrate east in another case registered by Dr Fauzia in July last year. staff report
