Nawaz bristles at Nab letter
LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) chief Mian Nawaz Sharif said the letter written by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is a grim mockery of the judiciary and democratic institutions in the country, adding some individuals are making efforts to drag courts at the heart of controversy, Geo News reported Thursday.
Talking to media here at Lahore airport before leaving for London along with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, he urged the government to acknowledge the higher judiciary and not steer itself as apex court, instead.
Nawaz Sharif said some measures taken by the government are detrimental to the democracy, adding whatever is taking place, is tantamount to grave ridicule to national institutions and judiciary.
The PML-N chief said the likes of Nab’s letter are not written in democratic societies, adding the courts are being made controversial, which could not be backed up.
He added, ‘If everything is to be buried under ground, the matter goes other way round; if not, the courts need to be buttressed.’
Sharif urged the government to expel the suicide bombers present in its rows; or, they will cause the government to crumble down eventually, remarking the people with claims of setting everything right within 90 days, cannot put their house in order.
He also urged Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani to hold a meeting with provincial governments, armed forces and intelligence agencies and also take into confidence his foreign friends followed by a national conference, so that it results into (actionable) decisions at the end.
Speaking on the occasion, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said an amount ranging Rs40 to 50 billion were siphoned off from Bank of Punjab (BoP), adding Punjab is extending to Sindh full cooperation over water distribution; however, the right to water should not be politicized between the provinces.
‘I don’t deem the Nab a good institution, as it is the creation of a dictator. The Nab cannot be compared with Saifur Rehman’s Ehtisab Commission,’ he added.
